A Leadership Tradition...

The Congregational Church of Birmingham has a tradition of strong lay leadership (not too surprising when ‘Congregation’ is part of your name).

Boards and Committees are organized to direct and carry out the missions of the Church, such as:  Worship, Christian Education, Outreach and Fellowship.  A central coordinating Church Council meets monthly to ensure communications and consistency in programming.

The Moderator represents the congregation to the Minister.  The Minister works with and is available to all the Boards and Committees.  Participation in monthly Council meetings and attendance at the monthly convening of the Boards and Committees facilitates this interaction.

Beyond the role of spiritual leader, the Minister serves as staff administrator.  He/she provides direction, monitors performance and provides performance feedback to the Church Council as appropriate.

An annual calendar of events is developed by the Church Council with input from each Board and Committee.  Monthly revisions/additions are implemented at monthly Council meetings.  The “Minister's Advisory Team” meets regularly with the minister to conceive and suggest future church events.

The full complement of Boards & Committees includes: Worship, Christian Education, Outreach, Fellowship, Finance Committee, Administration, Building & Grounds, Personnel, Nominating, Church Growth and Audit.

Beyond this traditional governance structure, we have encouraged new ideas as members pursued their passions with small group Ministries such as:  Stephen Ministry, Women’s Fellowship, Green, Red Comma Café, Community Garden, Music and Nurture & Care.

All the above are found in the Annual Report or Bylaws.
